February Colour Trends

Welcoming Light, Warmth, and the Year of the Green Snake:

As the cold grip of winter slowly releases its hold, February marks a transitional period full of potential for the design world. Whether influenced by the arrival of the Chinese New Year or the subtle shift in the lengthening days, this month presents an opportunity to explore fresher colours that evoke that much needed warmth and bring about a sense of hope, as we edge closer to spring and the brighter months.

February is a month of change. While the chilly days of winter still linger, there is an undeniable shift happening in the environment. The days begin to lengthen, bringing an increase in natural light. This shift invites fresh possibilities for design—lighter, brighter, and more uplifting tones are becoming more desirable as the promise of spring beckons.

At the same time, the end of January and the start of February marks the celebration of the Chinese New Year, ushering in the Year of the Green Snake. This event traditionally brings with it themes of renewal, growth, and transformation, symbolised by the vibrant green hue of the snake itself. For designers, the Year of the Green Snake offers rich, earthy greens that encourage balance and harmony, paired with the rejuvenating energy of nature’s vibrant colours.

These seasonal shifts offer a unique opportunity to rethink colour choices. February is a month where designers can continue to embrace the comforting, cocooning tones of winter, but with an eye towards the promise of spring’s freshness and light.

Designing for Transition

Embracing Light and Warmth

As the daylight hours gradually extend, it’s crucial to consider how the evolving light affects colour perception. Colours that appeared warm and enveloping in the deep winter months may now feel too heavy, while darker hues start to lose their comforting impact under the brighter skies. Yet, with the chill of February still in the air, there’s a need to balance this transition by incorporating both the warmth of winter and the brightness of the approaching season.

Warm neutrals are the perfect answer. Colours such as soft taupes, rich caramels, and warm greys work wonderfully in these in-between months, evoking a sense of comfort without feeling too dark. These grounding shades set the stage for brighter accents—such as icy off whites and blues, muted yellowish greens, and deep plums and reds—injecting energy and a fresh perspective as we move towards lighter, more vibrant days.

The Year of the Green Snake adds an exciting twist to this concept. The vibrant shades of green linked to the snake’s symbolism suggest growth and renewal, which can be translated into designs that celebrate a harmonious balance between nature and sophistication. Pairing muted greens with warm neutrals or contrasting them with deep, bold colours can add dimension and intrigue to any palette.

February’s Reconfigured Colour Palettes

Exploring New Possibilities With Fresh Combinations.

This month’s newly reconfigured colour palettes have been exciting to work on. In a departure from conventional colour pairings, we’ve created innovative combinations by mixing colours from different collections that would not ordinarily be seen together. The result is a fresh, unexpected fusion that encourages new design possibilities.

In keeping up with the theme of green, we have searched for warming greenish hues and paired their subtlety with strong accent colours to really fizz up how we usually view these colours.
The warmth of these neutral greens offers a sense of comfort and familiarity, while the bold accents inject a dash of vibrancy, providing an energetic contrast that feels invigorating as we edge closer to brighter days. The introduction of accent colours allows these palettes to come to life, providing fresh perspectives on otherwise familiar tones.

By reimagining these classic hues in new combinations, we hope to inspire designers and creators to think outside the box and experiment with bold, unexpected pairings. Whether in interior design, fashion, or product creation, the blending of neutral warmth with energetic pops of colour offers endless possibilities for innovation this February.

Gentle, Jal Jeera Lime, Jacaranda

Our first palette combines the cooling and clean ‘Gentle‘ from our Sadhana Collection with the warmth of our Indian Summer Collection‘s ‘Jal Jeera Lime‘. Paired with a strong plum like accent of the ‘Jacaranda‘ from our Tin Shack Collection, intended for subtle pops in the doors, radiators and trimmings. Perfectly bright in anticipation of the arrival of Spring without ever straying too far from the warmth afforded by the Jal Jeera Lime – warmth we very much need to take us through the last of these colder months.

Emperor's Marble, Krishna Leaf, Cardinal

Our second palette creates another variation of the first. Where the first builds with two harmonious colours and adds a kick at the end, this second variation gives you something to play with, setting the vibrancy of the Emperor’s Marble (from the Monsoon Rains Collection) apart from the Krishna Leaf (of the Mughal Spring Collection). Still just as bright, just as warm and just as hopeful, with a slightly richer and redder accent here with the Cardinal from the Tenth Collection.

Chai Firoji, Mughal Earth, Jali Grey

The third combination is more of a reduction of one of our existing palettes: The Mughal Spring Collection, itself a collaborative collection which saw Francesca Wezel and Aleta Bartel-Orton take inspiration from the green and blues of Indian spring. In our excitement for this coming change in season, we have reimagined the collection to bring the vibrancy of the Chai Firoji that bounces around the same earthy tones mirrored in the much deeper and richer Mughal Earth. Accented, this time, with a more tonally harmonious colour – The Jali Grey, intended to bring about subtle accents of colour without, perhaps, stealing too much attention.

JW1, Cairo, JW4

Our final palette was created without a strong accent colour in mind, favouring tonal harmony across your space. Here, Cairo from the Urban Chic Collection injects a subtle neutral warmth into our two selections from the John Waterhouse Collection: JW1 & JW4, both cleaner, fresher colours – in preparation for the changing season.

A Time for Renewal and Creativity

February is not just a time to anticipate the arrival of spring—it’s also a time to reflect, embrace change, and welcome new possibilities. As the light begins to shift, and the Year of the Green Snake beckons us to consider growth and transformation, the colours we choose can reflect that energy of renewal and rejuvenation. Our latest colour palettes, combining warm neutrals with daring accent hues, allow for a creative exploration of these changing seasons, setting the stage for an inspiring and fresh year ahead.

By embracing this period of transition, we invite you to explore, experiment, and create with a sense of optimism and curiosity, knowing that the world of colour is full of endless opportunities for growth and reinvention.

Galao I
January’s edition of House and Garden Magazine took a look into the London Flat of interior designer and dealer, Georgie Stogdon. The article saw the grand unveiling of a wonderfully designed staircase and the meticulous craft of object displays, from the woven to the painted, all expertly cast onto looming expanses of wall. And what an honour it is to be the paint of choice.

Galao I is a creamy delight. A delicacy, masterfully chosen by Stogdon to divert attention to her most wonderfully chosen wall hangings and other such sights of interest. But the Galao must not be mistaken for the simple white, earthy pigments subtly absorb and apply warmth to any light you cast upon it. Perfect for classicism, ideal for modern, and if you are Georgie Stogdon, an obvious choice to simultaneously sit between the two genres.

The article, which beautifully portrayed the beauty and strength of the colour, has very clearly impacted our audience. With this sudden influx in interest for our Galao 1, we thought it the obvious champion for Colour of the Month.
