Limewash Primer
Francesca’s Limewash Primer is made with selected quartz and sands, and it has been designed to allow the application of the Limewash on surfaces where normally it would not be possible to apply, for example Gypsum plaster, filled and previously painted surfaces. It is breathable and acts like a support between the Limewash and the surface that needs to be painted. It can be used internally and externally.
Suitable Surfaces
Francesca’s Limewash Primer was formulated to be used on the following surfaces:
Gypsum plaster
Gypsum plaster boards
Skimmed walls
Cement render
Previously painted surfaces that require filling or that may have been filled previously
Lining paper.
Surface Preparation
Before application, surfaces must be cleared of loose material, grease and oil.
Francesca’s Limewash Primer needs to create a uniform and even surface. It is possible to create this with one coat, but if after one coat your finish is not even please apply a second.
Apply Limewash Primer over filled surfaces first. Leave to dry for 24 hours before applying an even layer accross the entire wall.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to allow 24 hours before the application of the limewash because the limewash primer needs to harden. If you apply the limewash before and the surface has not hardened, then the limewash will always look for the surface underneath and the finish will come out very patchy.
This product can be applied by roller or by brush. Please note that the finish has to be very even to create the perfect base for the limewash. The primer allows the limewash to breath and to create the carbonation of the lime.
How to prepare our Limewash Primer
Dilute with 10 – 15% of water.
100 to 150 MLS OF WATER FOR 1 LITRE OF PRIMER.
The reason why our paints, including our Limewash Primer, needs to be diluted with water is to preserve the life of the materials to an unlimited period. Once water is added to a product, the stock life is substantially reduced, max 3 months and the water can make the paint contaminated with bacteria which is going to make the product unusable.
We give guidelines of how to dilute the products, but they are only guidelines. The product might need more or less water than what we say, the reason being that they might have been stored for a while or because they might have just been made, so it is important to understand what consistency our paints should be and add the water according to that.
Francesca’s Limewash Primer should create a continuous flow when pulled from the tub by brush or dip stick. There should not be any blobs of paint falling from the brush or too much running.

Limewash Primer FAQs
How does limewash primer affect the final colour and texture of the limewash finish?
Limewash is a very honest paint, it reveals any imperfections below, and magnifies them on the finished surface. The Limewash Primer is created with this in mind; it creates a solid white finish and dries to be flat as the perfect bed for the limewash allowing the Limewash to bloom on any wall, as it would on virgin Lime Plaster.
How is limewash primer different from a standard primer?
A primer is a bridge between a surface and a paint meaning it is always created with these two materials in mind. Some primers can claim a sense of universal applicability because most modern paints and most interior surfaces have very similar requirements from a primer. It doesn’t take much to create one which suits all. Limewash, on the other hand, is a very different paint and reacts very uniquely to various surfaces. This is why Francesca’s Paints have created a unique Limewash Primer which aids in this very specialist task.
