Surface Preparation

Before application, surfaces must be cleared of loose material, grease and oil.

Application

Stir well before use. Do not thin, except for absorbent surfaces when a small quantity of clean water may be added. Apply Francesca’s Masonry paint evenly by brush, roller or spray gun and avoid overspreading. Recoating after 2 to 4 hours. Do not apply in temperatures below 5 C. Avoid retouching the final coat.

Coverage

1 litre covers approximately 16 square metres, depending on the porosity of the surface. Stronger colours may require an extra coat. When using more than one tin colour in the same room, intermix before use.

Cleaning

Remove as much product as possible from application equipment before washing. Wash tools immediately after use in warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Do not empty product into drains or watercourses.

Colour variation can occur between batches due to the natural pigments used, therefore, it is recommended that all Francesca’s Masonry Finish be purchased at the same time. Keep the lid tightly on. Keep out of reach of children. Do not swallow and avoid eye contact. If accidental contact occurs, rinse eyes with copious amounts of water. WHEN USING MORE THAN ONE TIN COLOUR IN THE SAME ROOM, INTERMIX BEFORE USE.

Masonry Paint FAQs

What is the best type of masonry paint for exterior walls?

Breathable is best! Most houses need to expel moisture, either from rising ground water or general humidity. Breathable paints like our Limewash allow for the passage of water both ways meaning that your brickwork has a chance to dry out.
Some modern houses do not have this concern and do not expect any internal dampness. In this case a fully waterproof paint like our Masonry Finish allows you to lock all moisture out entirely, which will preserve the strength of your walls for longer.

Can I use masonry paint on previously painted surfaces?

Absolutely! Just like any other painted wall, you must first remove loose or peeling material, sand (to give the paint something to grip to) then clean thoroughly. You may also wish to use fungicidal wash to remove bacteria, fungus, mould etc before applying an undercoat to get a long lasting finish.

What is the difference between masonry paint and regular exterior paint?

Exterior Paints need to withstand a lot more than regular internal paints which means they tend to be a lot more specialist. Masonry Paint is specially formulated for the waterproofing of external walls, whereas regular exterior paints tend to provide protection to external woods and metals for sheds, railings, decking, fencing and other common outdoor infrastructure.

Is masonry paint breathable?

Paint breathability describes a paint’s ability to allow for the passage of water. To ensure full waterproofing, Masonry Paint is not breathable. If your house is particularly susceptible to rising groundwater, mildew and internal moisture, it is best to use a breathable alternative like our Limewash Paint. Whilst this cannot offer any waterproofing qualities, it can prevent other larger issues like the rotting of support beams.

Do I need to prime the masonry before painting?

For external walls which have never been painted, it is advisable to use a specialist masonry primer (This could be a ‘Sol Silicate Primer’ or a ‘Masonry Stabilising Solution Primer’). A primer, in this case, works by binding friable and porous surfaces to ensure an even, flake-free paint finish.
