Waterbased Eggshell
What is Waterbased Eggshell?
Francesca’s Acrylic Eggshell is made from tough acrylic resin and it is suitable for wall and ceiling surfaces in most interior situations and woodwork. Its low odour properties combined with ease of application and speed of drying allow the work to be completed with a minimum of disruption. It gives a mid-sheen finish of 17 – 22%. It is wipeable and it comes in all our colours.

Surface Preparation
Ensure surface to be painted is clean, dry and free from grease. Wear a suitable face mask when dry sanding. Remove all loose and defective paint. Rub down previously painted surfaces with fine waterproof abrasive to provide a good key. Avoid the inhalation of dust. Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding. Prime where required with appropriate Primer. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead.
Application
Stir well before use. On absorbent surfaces, the first coat should be thinned when necessary to ease application, taking care not to over-thin. Suitable for application by brush, roller or spray. Apply two full coats, allowing 3-4 hours between coats under normal conditions. On certain surfaces a third coat may be necessary. For spray application, thin with clean water as required, using up to approximately 0.5 litres of water to 5 litres of paint. Do not apply when air or surface temperature is below 10˚C. Conditions of high humidity can prolong the drying time.
Coverage
1 litre will cover approximately 12 square metres, depending on the nature and porosity of the surface. Strong and contrasting colour may require additional coats. When using more than one tin of a colour, intermix before use.
Cleaning
Remove as much product as possible from application equipment before cleaning. Clean equipment immediately after use in warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Some local authorities have special facilities for disposal of waste coatings. Do not empty product into drains or watercourses. Replace lid firmly. Keep out of the reach of children.
Waterbased Eggshell FAQs
What are the benefits of using water-based paint over oil-based paint?
Waterbased Eggshell is a fast drying and slightly more ecologically friendly alternative to the Oil Based Eggshell, emitting less VOCs and not requiring any harmful solvents when cleaning up.
Bear in mind that the Waterbased Eggshell cannot be used in exterior projects.
What are the differences in finish between water-based paint and oil-based paint?
Eggshells are resilient paints with an ever so subtle sheen which is why they are called eggshells, because they have a similar shine to the shell of an egg. Waterbased Eggshell has noticeably less sheen than its oil based alternative. (17-22% vs 35-37%), making it ideal for anyone who wants the durability of an eggshell but with a more subtle shine.
Is water-based paint environmentally friendly, and what makes it a sustainable choice?
Waterbased Eggshell is a more eco friendly alternative to Oil Eggshell, but is not to be confused with an actively ecological paint. Whilst the VOC count is much lower, and there is no need to use solvents in the cleaning process, it is worth remembering that this is still an acrylic based paint and acrylics (just like any form of plastics) are not environmentally friendly.
There is sadly no eco-friendly alternative to an Eggshell, which is why, as an eco conscious paint company, we continue to stock it.
Can I mix water-based paint with other types of paint or additives?
No. Waterbased paints cannot be mixed with any non-water-based alternatives. This is because their chemical build up is very different, it is exactly like mixing oil and water: even when violantly shaken, the two are merely dispersed amongst one another. You will notice, because they are not bonded to one another, that they will revert back to their unmixed forms almost immediately.
If you were to mix solvent based paints and water based paints, this splitting process could occur on the wall or in the tub and leave you with an undesirable finish.
Generally it is not advisable to create your own paints at home. If you are ever looking for a particular finish, or wish to use some leftovers for a project, please feel free to give us a call and we can offer you advice on what your paint can and cannot achieve.
