What is Oil Eggshell?

Francesca’s Oil Eggshell is a high quality oil-based satin sheen finish for woodwork and metal, suitable for internal and external use. It has a Sheen Level of 35 – 37%.
Please note that the paint looks glossy for up to 3 weeks after the application, when it will go back to its original eggshell finish. This is because it takes this long for the paint to completely dry and harden. Available in all of our colours

For a solvent free and waterbased alternative see our Waterbased Eggshell.

Oil Based Eggshell FAQs.

Why is it called Eggshell Paint?

Eggshell refers to the sheen level of the paint, inheriting its name from the slight shine of an actual eggshell. When first applied, Francesca’s Oil Eggshell may appear like a gloss finish, but over the next 3 weeks this will dullen into a sheen level of 35-37%, placing it somewhere between the appearance of a blackbird and a robin’s egg in terms of shininess.

Do you need a Primer with Eggshell Paint?

Francesca’s Oil Based Eggshell will have a stronger, neater and longer lasting finish if a primer or an undercoat is used. An easy rule of thumb is if a surface has been previously painted, use an undercoat but if the surface has never been painted, use a primer.
Remember that water based primers can also be used for oil based eggshells but oil based primers cannot be used for water based eggshells.

How do I maintain a surface painted in Eggshell?

Eggshells are very sturdy paints, creating a solid structural film over the area they have been applied to. Because of this, you will rarely need to work hard to remove any spillages or stains, simply wipe them away and clean with a bit of water if you can or soap if needed.

Is oil-based eggshell paint suitable for high-traffic areas?

Simply put, yes, eggshell is extremely durable and even suitable for external application. If you are expecting a paint that can take a beating for projects such as a busy kitchen or a small bathroom, then the oil based eggshell is for you.

How does oil-based eggshell paint compare to water-based alternatives in terms of durability?

Waterbased Eggshell is marginally less durable than its oil based alternative. In most cases they will perform very similarly, the only occasion they really differ is in external application where we would not advise the use of our waterbased eggshell. The main reason people choose the waterbased eggshell is less related to durability and more because it has slightly less sheen (17-22%, vs oil’s 35-37%) or because it is a less chemically harsh paint both during the application and cleaning process. Also note that oil based eggshell takes significantly longer to dry.

General Information

Ensure maximum ventilation during application and drying. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse with copious amount of water and seek medical advice. Keep out of reach of children.
