Postcard from Barra

Postcard from Barra
The Inspiration

I was incredibly touched by the beauty I found on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra, off the North-West coast of Scotland. I was lucky to spend time on the island over the summer, and its colours inspired me, eliciting a profound sense of calm and serenity.

Each day, I experienced a wonderful kaleidoscope of colours. They changed hour to hour depending on the varying levels of light. The numerous shades of green, the deep blue hues of the sea and the ever-changing tones of the sky. The colour of the sand, the seaweed on the beach, the lichen on the rocks, and the crofts, all provided much inspiration for a new collection.

The Collection

A Postcard from Barra, came very quickly to mind. The colours came to me clearly and immediately. I could picture five nature-inspired shades, each with a calm, soothing feel.

Thrift: a pale, soft pink made with my favourite pigments, raw and burnt umber and yellow ochre

Traigh: capturing the soft golden beige colour of sand

Lichen: a balanced, elegant, yellow brown

Sea Kale: a deep grey green with a nautical feel

Croft: a moody blue made with black, burnt, and raw umber and purple

Each colour within the collection is made with the same number of pigments, giving them a ‘tonal perfection’. This enables them to be combined to create coordinated palettes. Although wonderful when paired, each shade is strong on its own.

These are sophisticated, timeless colours, designed to transcend interior trends and fashions.
