Ensure surface is sound, clean, dry and free from grease. Remove all loose and defective paint. Rub down glossy surfaces with fine waterproof abrasive paper. Seal absorbent surfaces with a solution of up to 1 part of water to 9 part of Matt Emulsion.
Application
Stir well before use. Do not thin, except for absorbent surfaces, or when applying by roller or spray when a small quantity of clean water may be added. Suitable for application by brush, roller or spray. Apply evenly and avoid overspreading. Apply second coat after 2-4 hours. Do not apply in temperature below 10C.
Coverage
1 litre will cover approximately 14 square meters depending on porosity of surface. Strong colours might require additional coats.
Cleaning
Remove as much product as possible from application equipment before washing. Wash tools immediately after use in warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Do not empty product into drains or watercourses.
General Information
Colour variation can occur between batches due to the natural pigments used, therefore, it is recommended that all Francesca’s Smart Emulsion be purchased at the same time. Keep the lid tightly on. Keep out of reach of children. Do not swallow and avoid eye contact. If accidental contact occurs, rinse eyes with copious amounts of water. WHEN USING MORE THAN ONE TIN COLOUR IN THE SAME ROOM, INTERMIX BEFORE USE.
Matt Emulsion FAQs
What is the difference between matt emulsion and satin emulsion?
The most obvious difference between these two paints is the sheen level, Satin has slightly more sheen than the Matt Emulsion, it is also easier to clean and slightly more durable. Matt emulsion on the other hand is easier to touch up as it is less obvious and patchy when applied in smaller areas.
Is matt emulsion paint suitable for high-traffic areas?
The simple answer is no, they are a lot harder to clean, they mark a lot easier and whilst they are easy to touch up, it is a lot more effective to have a cleanable paint instead. For a matt finish in high traffic areas, consider A Smart Emulsion which is completely scrubbable and matt.
Is matt paint washable?
To a certain extent, yes. Matt emulsion paint is wipeable due to its vinyl content, it cannot, however, be scrubbed. This makes it perfect for a bit of dirt or a splash of liquid, but not ideal for anything which could stain.
What are the pros and cons of using matt emulsion paint?
Matt Emulsion’s main selling point is its ease of use, it doesn’t need diluting, solvents or any special application notes. In this way, Matt Emulsion is a very widely understood paint which any painter should feel confident and familiar with.
The reason we do not primarily use Matt emulsion as our standard wall paint, is because it is not eco friendly or breathable. Matt Emulsion is synthetic, it forms a film over the wall which stops moisture passing through the walls. In bathrooms it is responsible for that classic bubbling effect you often see. Because Matt Emulsion is pre-diluted for ease of use, it has a shorter shelf life.
Matt Emulsion is most suitable for deeper or darker colours as both the Eco Emulsion and the Limewash’s base already contain an amount of white due to the natural way in which they are made.
How do I achieve the best finish with matt emulsion paint?
Matt Emulsion is a very simple paint to apply. To achieve a better finish, ensure your surface is clean and well prepared as preparation is the best way to improve with painting. Certain Rollers and brushes are not suitable for the application of Matt Emulsion, it is always important to check you have the correct tools before you start. Always mix the paint well and ensure you have enough paint for the section you are working on before you begin.
